Beauty tutorials are big on YouTube — a search for “makeup tutorial” and “hair tutorial” yields more than 5 million videos. In this weekly series, we put a mix of popular and under-the-radar tutorials to the test and show you what’s best.
YouTube tutorials are a great resource for learning new beauty tricks, but I frequently watch makeup videos with absolutely no intention of recreating the look. Why? Because much like old episodes of “30 Rock” or homemade cookies, a good makeup tutorial will restore your faith in humanity. Beauty therapy is a real thing: Just see Lisa Eldridge’s “Meeting Up with the Ex” video for proof.
The best is when one of these feel-good tutorials also contains a lot of great beauty advice. Such is the case with “Makeup for Redheads.” Published on Eldridge’s YouTube channel, it’s a guest video from fellow makeup artist Mary Greenwell, who creates a vampy look that even a pale redhead can pull off. Although it’s directed at freckle-faced ladies, the knowledge communicated in these 13 minutes really applies to everyone, of every coloring.
Greenwell gives a great lesson on how to pull off a strong, deep lip and eye at the same time and end up looking chic rather than nightmarish. While that proposition might seem intimidating, her point is that you should stop fussing so much about perfecting your makeup and get a little messy — don’t worry about using the right brush or avoiding purple eyeshadow. In fact, makeup can actually be its best when it’s a little haphazard. With that, go forth and get vampy.
